supercold

Cryogenics is a fairly new branch of science which is concerned with the behavior of matter at extremely cold temperatures. Scientists have discovered that matter has a variety of unusual properties when it is subjected to a supercold temperatures.

MATERIALS: A Pyrex beaker; dry ice; acetone; tongs; large, fresh leaves; rubber tubing; grapes, bananas, hotdogs, etc.

HOW TO DO IT: Put several chunks of dry ice into the beaker. pour enough acetone to cover the ice. In a minute or two, the mixture will be cold enough to freeze the rubber tubing, grapes, bananas, hot dogs etc., in a few seconds. Now immerse about a half of the leaves into the mixture for about 10-20 seconds. Bring it out and crush it. Then try immersing other materials like the rubber tubing, grapes hotdogs etc. BUT NOT YOUR HANDS OR ANY PART OF YOUR BODY!

CAUTION: Acetone is a volatile solvent. It is flammable. It is dangerous to sniff it. Do not make more than one container of the mixture described above at a time and be certain that the room is well ventilated. DO NOT DIP YOUR HANDS INTO THE BEAKER: it is very cold enough to freeze and kill an organism
